Generals Squeeze by Blue Wahoos 1-0

BY MICHAEL HAMMOND | Minor League Knocks Aug. 25, 2017 | Jackson Generals 1, Pensacola Blue Wahoos 0 | Southern League (AA) PENSACOLA, Fla. – Both offenses stalled out in Pensacola, Florida, on Friday until Marty Herum unloaded a solo shot in the top of the ninth to lift the Jackson Generals 1-0 over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Blue Wahoos Stadium. Other than the home run, no real scoring threat happened except for when Jackson’s Travis Denker was thrown out at the plate for the final out in the fourth inning on a Herum single. Pensacola starter Jose Lopez put together a strong start through six innings to continue upon a strong 7-1 record in the Southern League. Lopez allowed five hits and one walk while striking out seven. Lopez’ opponent, Ryan Atkinson put together an identical quality start with both pitchers finishing with a 71 game score. Atkinson lasted seven innings and was efficient on 87 pitches despite walking five batters. Neither starter picked up a decision. Five relief pitchers combined to go five perfect innings except for Carlos Gonzalez giving up Herum’s homer in the ninth. Andury Acevedo picked up the save after coming in with two outs in the ninth and striking out the only batter he faced to end the game. The Blue Wahoos hold a first half South Division title and have known their playoff fate since the halfway point of the season. However, Jackson is fighting an uphill battle for post season contention sitting eight games back of the Montgomery Biscuits for the second half playoff spot in the North Division.
