DES MOINES, Iowa – Two days after Kyle Schwarber’s AAA stint (11 games, .343/.477/.714, 4 HR, 9 RBI) came to an end, a six-run second inning was enough for the Iowa Cubs to take down the Omaha Storm Chasers 7-5 on Friday in Des Moines, Iowa.
Chicago Cubs No. 7 prospect, Jeimer Candelario, started off the second with a bang by sending a solo shot to left. Omaha’s Onelki Garcia walked in two runs following an error on a sac bunt before Jemile Weeks unloaded the bases with a 2-out double.
Garcia’s night ended after two innings allowing six runs, one earned on four hits, three walks, and two strikeouts.
The Storm Chasers brought their first run around on Cam Gallagher’s RBI-groundout to short bringing home Bubba Starling.
Chris Dominguez put the Cubs’ final run on the board with a home run to left to lead off the fifth. Dominguez finished with three hits, two runs, and one RBI in four at-bats. This extends a stretch where he is hitting .512 with three homers, 10 runs, and 10 RBI in his last 10 games. Dominguez sits at .327/.357/.535 with nine HR and 36 RBI on the year.
In the seventh, Omaha ended the rout as Raul Mondesi blasted a grand-slam well over the 400-foot sign in center field to bring the Storm Chasers within two at 7-5. Starling followed Mondesi’s home run with a single, but he was the final Storm Chaser to reach base on the night as Fernando Rodriguez Jr. and Matt Carasiti shut the door.
Carasiti picked up his 15th save on the year. In a pitch by committee game the Cubs’ first reliever, Justin Hancock, picked up his first win in his first decision of the year. David Rollins started for the Cubs going three innings and allowing zero runs on two hits and six strikeouts.
The highlight play of the game came from Storm Chasers’ third baseman Corey Toups. With no outs and runners on first and second, Toups dove for an Art Solis grounder to his right, got up to tag third base, and launched a throw to first to get the second out.
