ERIE, Pa. – After blowing a five-run lead, the Erie Seawolves came back to take the lead in the eighth for a 8-6 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Wednesday at UPMC Park in Erie, Pennsylvania.

The Seawolves got out to a blazing start with Zach Cox unloading a one-out grand slam in the bottom of the first. The home run ball hit the top of the Erie Insurance Arena, which serves as the left field fence, nearly 33-feet in the air.

Erie tacked on another run in the second with a Harold Castro double scoring A.J. Simcox.

In the top of the second it was Richmond’s turn to get on the scoreboard. Jeff Arnold came in on a C.J. Hinojosa groundout and Slade Heathcott scored on a Myles Schroder single in back-to-back at-bats. The lead was cut to 5-3 the next inning when Caleb Gindl hit a leadoff homer.

After the rough start for Richmond starter and San Francisco Giants No.18 prospect, Daniel Slania, went four more innings and faced one batter over the minimum. Slania went six innings and allowed five runs on seven hits, two walks, and one strikeout.

The ball kept flying out of the yard for the Flying Squirrels with K.C. Hobson’s leadoff homer in the sixth and Schroder’s two-out two-run dinger in the seventh giving Richmond a 6-5 lead.

With two out in the bottom of the eighth Erie took its lead back. Detroit Tigers No. 9 prospect, Steven Moya, hit a two-run pinch-hit triple. Simcox then hit Moya home for an insurance run as the Seawolves took an 8-6 lead.

Paul Voelker came in to earn the save for Erie and struck out the first two batters in the ninth before getting Hinojosa to flyout to first for the final out. It was save number three for Voelker.

With the win the Seawolves take the series 2-1 from the Flying Squirrels. Erie won two-straight in the late innings, including a Tuesday walk-off, after dropping the first game of the series 4-0 to Richmond.

The Seawolves moved to 49-45 and into a tie for first place in the Eastern League Western Division with the Altoona Curve and Bowie Baysox.
