RICHMOND, Va. – Big middle innings carried the Portland Sea Dogs over the Richmond Flying Squirrels 9-4 at The Diamond on Wednesday in Richmond, Virginia.

Boston Red Sox #11 prospect Michael Chavis first lit up the scoreboard with a two-run home run to left-center in the fourth inning. Three-straight singles scored Jeremy Barfield and Josh Okimey scored on a Cole Sturgeon sac-fly that was dropped by left fielder Daniel Carbonell.

A C.J. Hinojosa leadoff double turned into a run on an Aramis Garcia single in the bottom half, but that was the only threat for the Flying Squirrels.

Portland loaded the bases quickly in the fifth, then Josh Tobias unloaded them with a two-out double that soared over the center fielder’s head to the wall. The Sea Dogs tacked another run on in the sixth with a Barfield RBI-single to go up 8-1.

Caleb Gindl led off the Squirrels sixth with a home run, but the offense was cut short by their third double play of the game.

The Flying Squirrels finally got the offense off the ground in the seventh—their only inning with more than five batters—but again had to rely on power to score. Dylan Davis hit a two-run homer to cut the lead to 8-4. Gindl followed it up with a double, but after a walk, Myles Schroder struck out to halt a potential comeback.

Sea Dogs starter, Teddy Stankiewicz, was chased during the Richmond seventh after going 6.2 innings giving up four runs on eight hits, three walks, and three strikeouts to improve to 4-4 in the Eastern League.

Portland notched the final three of their 13 hits in the ninth, adding their final run in the process, but what could have been more was halted by a lineout double play to first. Barfield led the Red Sox AA squad with three hits, while Tobias was tops with three RBI.

Richmond tallied nine hits, but went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position proving ineffective at putting runs on the board.

The Diamond sits north of downtown Richmond and it can’t be missed when you drive by. Home to the Flying Squirrels and the VCU Rams, The Diamond’s grandstand looks more like one-quarter of a football stadium than a normal ballpark grandstand.

The Squirrels hosted their weekly Wine Wednesday with wine options available from a special concession stand.

Bluefield Blue Jays at Danville Braves on Aug. 10.
